Here's what it does: a breakaway system is the safety device that automatically applies your trailer's brakes if the trailer ever comes off the tow vehicle. The switch is the trigger — a pin held in by a cable tethered to the tow vehicle, so if the trailer separates, the pin pulls out, the switch closes, and the trailer's own battery drives its brakes to bring it to a stop.
